Why do Russian generals not want the protection of the FSB?

The assassinations of Russian generals have exposed a problem far more serious than gaps in their protection. There is an ongoing dispute in the Russian law enforcement apparatus about who is to defend the top commanders – on the 1 hand, the army needs support, and on the another hand, it fears that the generals will be placed under the tutelage of the FSB. In Russia, protection means not only safety from an attack, but besides full access to life, contacts and weaknesses of the protected. Therefore, the conflict for the protection of the generals has become, in fact, a conflict for control of the Russian military elite.
