If everything goes as planned, Germany will have a fresh government in 3 weeks, and the Chancellor will be Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian-Democratic Union.

On 6 May, or 2 and a half months after the Bundestag election, CDU leader Friedrich Merz is to be elected by the Bundestag as Chancellor. Parliament president Julia Klöckner makes preparations for this day, announced the Bundestag. However, the prerequisite is the agreement of the CDU, CSU and SPD parties to the coalition agreement.

The CSU executive authorities have already approved the coalition agreement and the CDU will take a decision on 28 April at the organization conference. SPD members will vote on the 144-page agreement from Tuesday (15 April) to 29 April. Acceptance of the coalition agreement requires not only a majority of votes, but besides a participation of at least 20 percent of members. The vote will take place digitally.

If Merz is elected Chancellor on May 6, his cabinet will most likely besides be sworn in that day. The German government will then, precisely six months after the break-up of the Olaf Scholz coalition on 6 November 2024, begin work.

Friedrich Merz is very curious in improving relations with Poland. His candidate for head of MFA Johann Wadephul held polling talks in Warsaw. The mission is not easy due to the fact that many things are unresolved. You'll read more about it here.
