WHAT ARE PEOPLE LIVES WITH TODAY?
JERZY JURANDOT
I think so, and I think, what do people live on today?
They are elegant, they eat and drink,
They play ping-pong, they ski,
They dance, love, and cheat on cards,
They smoke, vote, compose bills, don't pay,
Above all, they live. I wonder, for what?
And I look at the tux I'm wearing,
And I'm starting to realize where the dog is buried:
Somewhere on a farm in Australia they take wool from sheep,
The breeder and the breeder's household live from this,
He who watches the sheep, and he who feeds them,
And he who shaves them at the right time,
The 1 who sorts wool after removing it from sheep,
The 1 who's already sorted out is taking him to the steamer.
There's joy and general emotion on the steamer,
Because that's where the people I'm gonna mention are going to live.
Captain, helmsman, radiotelegraphers,
The engineer, the smokers, the 1 who cleans the chimney,
Senior cook, cooks, those who wash the floors,
Lieutenant, Petty Officer and the remainder of the crew,
Those who make machines different lubricants and oil,
Those who are carrying the wool from the ship to the railroad.
On the turn again joy and general emotion,
Because that's where the people I'm gonna mention are going to live.
Minister of Railways, Directors of Railways,
Those who are expected to throw out those who are going to jail,
The steward and the teller, and the teller of 2 sons,
A guy with soda water and a ping-wine salesman.
The 1 with the family, the 1 with the ticket,
Those who take the goods from the train to the factory,
And in the mill again joy and general emotion,
Because that's where the people I'm gonna mention are going to live.
The builder of the factory, his flame, the factoryr,
And Mr. elder Procurator, and Mr. Junior Practitioner,
Those who draw patterns, all weavers and weavers,
Those who dye the product, those who tie it in packages,
Those who take packages to the post office,
To be given to my tailor, Mr. Konopka of Wierzbowa,
And with Mr. Konopka again a general emotion,
Because that's where the people I'm gonna mention are going to live.
Mr. Konopka and his wife, his parent and stepfather,
His boy with his bride, the apprentices with the cutler,
The power plant, the gas plant, the ones who gave him the loan,
And a button maker, and a sketch artist.
The tux is cut first, then the necks and measures,
Then the tux is ready, perfectly laid.
I take it, I don't pay – I don't, let them kill me!
Now I ask:
What do people live on today?
“And you?”
What do people live on today?
