Students had already heard the first bell, in the lesson plans saw a fresh subject: wellness education. While the Ministry of National Education encourages participation in wellness education, which is to be "an investment in the wellness and safety of young people", family-friendly environments look at this change with large concern. Is it justified?
In the 2025/2026 school year, wellness education is optional for pupils from the 4th grade of primary school to the 3rd grade of secondary school, replacing household education. In order for the student not to gotta attend it, his parent or legal guardian must make a declaration of resignation from the subject at school by 25 September 2025.
– There are quite a few valuable content, specified as digital hygiene, care for movement and healthy eating habits, based on programme wellness education. The student is besides expected to be able to explain what preventive and screening studies are and in which groups they are performed or to discuss the needs of people with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum and ADHD. He is to be able to prepare simple, healthy meals on his own. However, this is not the only content of the software base. There are besides issues of concern in it, from what I observe, any of the society. The student will request to be able to discuss the concept of psychosexual orientation and directions of its development, explain concepts related to sex identity, list criteria for informed consent and discuss situations in which it can be applied in sexual but besides friendly, household and social relations. She is expected to be able to discuss liable and satisfactory sexual life, factors affecting the quality of sexual life, sex stereotypes or to discuss legal and social issues related to belonging to LGBTQ+ group," explains Magdalena Guziak-Nowak, Education manager at the Polish Association of Human Life Defenders, author of books and school textbooks, household advisor, private wife and mother.
It has calculated that 26 educational requirements appear in the curriculum for wellness education, which have not yet been implemented in education lessons for household life, biology, gymnasium, education for safety and nature. – In my opinion, it is not much to make a fresh object. fresh content, located in the programming basis of the fresh object, could be broken down in a place of the late depleted programming basis. However, the Ministry wants a fresh subject – says Magdalena Guziak-Nowak. – I am not a lawyer, but I think that the curriculum for wellness education does not implement a statutory delegation. Article 4 “Laws on household Planning, Protection of Human Fetals and Conditions of Admissibility of Abortion” of 1993 states that a student should hear at school about the value of the household and the life conceived. He will not hear these values in wellness education lessons," he adds.
Magdalena Guziak-Nowak compared the frequency of the occurrence of key words in the program basis to upbringing for household life and wellness education. As she emphasizes, this is simply a purely mathematical calculation that does not show the context of the occurrence of a given word. – There is simply a tendency after my querement. For example, the word love appears 10 times in the program basis for raising to life in the family, and only 4 times in the program basis for wellness education, the word work 16 and 8, respectively, the household 52 and 14, matrimony 13 and 2, kid 12 and 2, sex/sexuality 24 and 47.
What, then, is the full wellness education thing? – If I were to answer 1 sentence, I will repeat for Dr. Zbigniew Barciński that we are dealing with a change of frame. The context is changing, the paradigm, the climate in which we discuss issues related to sexuality. So far, even as part of raising a family, sexuality has been related to household and love. If the teacher was talking about sexual initiation or co-existence, he put it in the family, responsibility, love. present Minister Barbara Nowacka ties sexuality to health. The “conditions” that request to be fulfilled to have sex are changing. No longer needs love or matrimony (though civil) or even a permanent, safe relationship. Today, only 2 simple “conditions” are needed: conscious consent – if you and I agree, sex is fine, we can arrange for it with any frequency and safety – against sexually transmitted diseases (STD, STI) and from a kid who, as we see from the mathematical calculations I mentioned earlier, fell out of the orbit of interest of people active in creating the basic programming of the fresh subject.
It is worth noting that sexual education has been present in the Polish school for respective decades. She was introduced in preparation classes in the socialist family. – The slogan “no sexual education”, raised by any left-wing environments, is simply a phrase, a blow. He is eager to receive supporters of model B sex education (biological sex education according to the American Academy of Pediatrics), while raising to life in a household promoted model A (based on education to be faithful and responsible) - explains Magdalena Guziak-Nowak.
The expert besides stresses that we cannot look at wellness education without Western context. – In Germany, Switzerland, large Britain, Sweden and so on. Sexual education was introduced in tiny steps. Parents in Germany woke up (on a massive scale) in 2015. We remember those large protests on the streets. However, it was already, unfortunately, besides late. The subject was already mandatory – he notes.
