Warsaw celebrated the year of the Uprising

Alarm sirens in the hr W, the sign of Poland fighting in Warsaw sky, honor volleys, the appeal of memory, wreaths on graves and places connected with the Warsaw Uprising – so the veterans, state authorities and residents of Warsaw celebrated the memory of the heroes of the fight about the capital.

At precisely 5 p.m. on the anniversary, erstwhile the Warsaw insurgents faced a fight 81 years ago, alarm sirens cried out in the capital and as all year the city stopped to pay tribute to its heroes.

The anniversary of the “W” hour, i.e. the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, was commemorated at the monument Gloria Victis at the Military Cemetery in Powązki, among others by president Andrzej Duda, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Marshal of the legislature and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defence. Politicians and combatants laid wreaths at the monument, the insurgents were celebrated with a minute of silence and a salute. At the same time, in the sky above Al. Jerozolimski there was a sign of Poland fighting with a streak of smoke drawn by pilots of the Warsaw Aeroclub, and along the Vistula River flew a plane with a banner “Remember 1944”.

After the ceremony in Powązki, its participants moved to the monument of Polegli Niepokonany to the Warsaw Uprising Cemetery. There were flowers placed on the Kurhana, which contains ashes of over 50,000 inhabitants of the capital. “Remember us erstwhile we leave and remember what we fought for, and we fought to free Warsaw and to let those from the East enter us as guests,” said Wanda Traczyk-Stawska, insurgency associate and president of the Social Committee for the Warsaw Uprising Cemetery. She stressed that what is happening in the planet is very disturbing and we must be vigilant. “Let us halt arguing about stupid things, due to the fact that Poland is the most crucial thing – she appealed to the participants of the ceremony.

Rafał Trzaskowski, president of Warsaw, besides spoke. – The insurgents have been teachers of past for decades, but besides of life teachers, due to the fact that they remind about the most crucial things that any forget, including the destiny of the civilian population during the Warsaw Uprising," noted the president of the city. As he added, present we remember the civilian population, which behaved as heroicly as the soldiers, and supported them in the fight. “At the time of trial, we are obliged to pass the exam, just as they passed it, and let these tests not be as dramatic as during the war,” added Trzaskowski. The celebration ended the appeal of the fallen, the ecumenical prayer and the laying of flowers.

The celebrations of the 81st anniversary of the uprising have been in the capital since morning. On the “Mat of Freedom”, which is located on the Roundabout of the AK Radosław Group, the Polish flag with the symbol of the Fighting Poland blows. She will be present there until 2 October, the day of the end of the insurgent fighting.

Before noon, president Andrzej Duda and president Elekt Karol Nawrocki commemorated the victims of the Wola massacre. They placed flowers in front of the plaque at 55 Wolska Street on the site of the erstwhile Ursus factory, at the site of the execution of about 7 1000 inhabitants of Warsaw. “On 1 August we begin by celebrating the murdered civilian inhabitants of the capital, victims of the Wola massacre,” said president Duda.

He emphasized the importance of commemorating the victims of the crime committed by the Germans on the civilian population of Warsaw in the first days of August 1944. As he pointed out, it is widely spoken of the fighting of soldiers, as well as the bombings of the city in which civilians besides suffered. On the another hand, it is not common cognition that during the first days of the uprising the Germans began the extermination of the capital's population. – The order that Adolf Hitler, as Heinrich Himmler and his subordinate officers, issued at the time, was to execution the inhabitants of Warsaw, which began here, in Warsaw Wola, where between 50 and 60 1000 civilian residents of Warsaw were murdered in those first days of August 1944," stressed the president.

In turn, Karol Nawrocki stressed that even in the conditions of German cruelty and barbarism, Poles were ready for military revolt. “We were ready to make deep sacrifices, to give our lives for Poland being free and independent,” added the president-elect.

Throughout the city, you will present the authorities, among them Stanisław Wzątek, Deputy Minister of Defence, residents and combatants, laying flowers at the memorials and in places connected with the uprising, among others, at the plaque commemorating the signing of the order to start the uprising by Colonel Antoni Chruściel "Monter", commander of the Warsaw territory of the AK, at the monument of Mokotów Fighting 1944, the monument to the Women of the Warsaw Uprising, the plaque commemorating the Grey Serials, at the graves of the AK commanders at the Military Cemetery in Powązki: Gen. Tadeusz Komorowski "Bor", Gen. Stefan Rowecki "Grot" and Gen. Leopold Okulicki "Niedźwiadek" and at the grave of Gen. Chrushiel.

The insurgents were besides commemorated at the monument of the Polish Underground State and the Home Army. – 81 years ago on 1 August 1944 the people of Warsaw and its armed formations with the National Army took the lead in a courageous fight for the right of the Polish people to be – reminded Janusz Komorowski, president of the planet Union of National Army Soldiers. As he added, he hopes that the patriotic attitude and ethos of 81 years ago will proceed to be preserved in the memory of the nation.

In turn, Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska stressed that the message of the uprising became a recurring communicative about free country and national duty. “Today we can say that the uprising did not end after 63 days of fighting, but ended with the emergence of “Solidarity” and then the 3rd Republic, the new, victorious Poland,” said the marshal.


Rafał Trzaskowski addressed the insurgents. "Let us learn from your experience, from your courage, your willingness to sacrifice, but besides your ability to organize yourself perfectly and your ability to build a community and show solidarity," said the city president.

In the evening, Warsawers met at the Marshal Józef Piłsudski Square to sing insurgent songs together under the motto "Warsawers sing (not)forbidden songs".

Today's celebration will end with inflammation of memory at the Warsaw Uprising Mound in the “Burza” Action Park in Mokotów. Fire will bring “the relay of generations” from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Flowers will be folded and an illumination of the monument will be included, which will last 63 days, as long as Warsaw's raves lasted.
