Trump's statements and various leaks show that he hoped for a repeat of the Venezuelan script in Iran, where Maduro's deportation to the US put force on the authorities (although it is not yet known how effective it will be). Iran's response, which was predictable, was said to have come as a surprise to the U.S. leader, who even expressed his readiness to negociate with Iran. The problem is that Iran does not want them now, and surely not on the terms that Trump expects - unilateral acceptance of American and Israeli demands.
