Wanda Połtawska died – a doctor of psychiatry and an activist for the defence of human life

On the night of 24th and 25th October Wanda Połtawska died – a doctor of psychiatry and an activist for the defence of life and dignity, a prisoner of the German concentration camp in Ravensbrück, a friend of St John Paul II, in 2016 decorated with the Order of the White Eagle Order of the White Eagle, Honorary Citizen of the City of Krakow. For respective decades, Dr. Połtawska was active in matrimony and household counseling. She taught at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Kraków.. On November 2, she would have turned 102.
The ceremony of late Wanda Połtawska will take place on Tuesday, 31 October this year, at 1 p.m. in Mariacka Basilica in Krakow.Earlier, at 12.30 p.m., the rosary will be refused in the intention of the deceased Professor. The ceremonies of the last farewell will be held at the parish cemetery in Salvatore, Cracow at 4 p.m. The celebrations will be state-owned.

Before planet War II, Wanda Połtawska acted in Scouting, while the business served as a liaison. Arrested for conspiratorial activity, first imprisoned at the Lublin Castle, then she was transported to a German concentration camp in Ravensbrück, where she was subjected to pseudomedical experiments. She was a miracle survivor, and after her liberation she participated in the work of the Hitler Crimes investigation Commission in Poland.
She conducted investigation on the "children of the Holy" – people who, as children, went to concentration camps. She besides developed a method of "objective psychotherapy" based on awareness of unsuited youth of her place in the household and society. She besides dealt, based on her experience in counseling, with the influence of abortion on the psyche of a female and with the influence of contraception on marital and household relationships.
From 1955 to 1997 Wanda Połtawska taught pastoral medicine at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Krakow, now the Pontifical University of John Paul II. In 1967, at this university, she organized the Institute of household Theology, which she led for 33 years, training young couples, brides and priests. She besides taught lectures at the John Paul II Institute at the Lateran University in Rome. She wrote a number of papers on preparing for matrimony and on the right attitude toward sexual intercourse.
Dr. Połtawska was active in actions to defend human life. In many publications and speeches, she cited values and principles of bioethics derived from Christian anthropology. She wrote a number of papers on preparing for matrimony and on the right attitude toward sexual intercourse.
In 2014, she published “A Declaration of Faith”, signed by 4,000 doctors. She was active in promoting the value of matrimony and family. She tried to convey the teaching of Pope John Paul II about the sanctity of human love. She organized and activated doctors in the ministry of life and family.
The author of nearly 400 publications on psychiatry, protection of unborn life, sick and elderly, issues of matrimony and family. Wanda Połtawska was honored, among others, with the Medal of the Polish legislature and the Commander's Cross of the papal Order of Saint Gregory the Great. She received an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Lublin and the Notre Dame Pontifical Catechetical Institute in Arlington, Virginia. She was besides decorated with the Commander's Cross with the Star of the Order of Polish Revival.
