Another musical loss. At the age of 85, Waldemar Kurpiński died – a baritone master, 1 of the fewer musicians in Poland, devoted exclusively to this variant of saxophone.
He studied at the Karol Kurpiński School of Music in Warsaw, which he graduated in 1960. He initially played clarinet, then occasionally besides on alto and tenor saxophone, since 1961 on the baritone, which he made his crown instrument. "Polish Gerry Mulligan", recalls the kind of the game, the speech of saxophone, but besides the appearance of the American baritone corpheus. His first formation was Six Boys Stompers, with whom he performed in the Warsaw Hybrids. He played for the fresh Orleans Stompers. With this band he performed in 1958 at the second performance at the National Philharmonic. respective tracks with his participation were released on the celebrated Warsaw Stompers album, which in 1965 initiated the series "Polish Jazz".
He performed with the band Katarzyna Gaertner at the historical first Jazz Jamboree festival in 1958 at the Barn on Emilia Plater. With Oktet Jerzy “Duduśia” Matuszkiewicz, representing the club Hybrids, he played at the festival in Helsinki in 1962. In 1971, he became a associate of the Jazz Studio of Polish Radio p/k Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, for many years he played in the S-1 Studio of Andrzej Trzaskowski, and besides in the large Band Wiesław Pieregorólka. Together with pianist Wojciech Majewski, bassist Pawel Pańta and drummer Piotr Biskupski, Waldemar Kurpiński Quartet creates the band.
