The work of Ana María Matute, who died in 2014, is undoubtedly 1 of the most moving testimonies of Spanish literature of the 20th century. Her prose grows out of the experiences of civilian war, but Matute looks deep into the human psyche, in places where war leaves the most enduring traces, explores childhood, memory and loneliness in the face of danger.
