LONDON— Passengers on Virgin Atlantic (VS) flight VS009 from London Heathrow (LHR) to New York JFK Airport (JFK) were left appalled when several suitcases arrived coated in a foul-smelling brown substance. The incident, which occurred on July 14, 2025, sparked health concerns and widespread social media attention.
Virgin Atlantic (VS) confirmed that only a “small number” of bags were affected and clarified that the contamination occurred within JFK Airport (JFK) after the luggage had arrived. Airport authorities later identified the substance as grease leaking from a faulty kitchen pipe.

Virgin Passengers Foul Baggage at JFK Incident
According to JFK International Airport Terminal 4 operator JFKIAT, the substance was traced to a drainage system linked to a defective kitchen sink pipe.
Officials stated that the residue was residual cooking oil grease, not sewage or biohazard waste. Despite this explanation, many passengers, including Taz McGlynn, a hospital pharmacist, expressed disbelief, citing the unbearable stench resembling human faeces.
Ms McGlynn shared her firsthand experience: “I work in a hospital and have encountered human waste on stoma wards—this was worse.”
She reported the substance smeared on her hands, feet, and clothing, forcing her to repack belongings into plastic bags and purchase a new suitcase. She estimated that around 30 passengers may have been affected.
Social media further amplified concerns, with a TikTok video showcasing the soiled luggage circulating widely, amassing nearly 3 million views.
Claims emerged that the contamination stemmed from the aircraft’s toilet waste, though Virgin Atlantic firmly denied this, attributing the cause solely to JFK’s baggage handling system.

Virgin Atlantic and JFKIAT Response
Virgin Atlantic (VS) issued an apology, confirming collaborative efforts with JFK Airport (JFK) and local authorities to address the issue.
The airline stressed that the contamination did not originate from the aircraft itself. In addition, passengers were offered guidance on sanitation procedures and the option for professional biohazard cleaning services.
A spokesperson stated, “We’re aware of a New York JFK system failure that has affected the baggage of a small number of arriving customers. We’re working closely with the team at JFK and local authorities to ensure the issue is resolved. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to affected customers.”
JFKIAT echoed these remarks, assuring that remedial actions were underway to prevent recurrence. The airport operator emphasized that the drainage system has since been inspected and repaired.
Health Risks and Safety Advice
Professor Azeem Majeed, head of primary care and public health at Imperial College London, addressed public health concerns. He advised that passengers handling contaminated luggage should use disposable gloves and wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water to minimize infection risk.
While the likelihood of severe illness remains low if proper hygiene is maintained, exposure to potentially contaminated substances can lead to gastrointestinal infections if precautions are ignored.
Affected travellers have also been provided information on compensation claims for damaged belongings, ensuring recourse for those inconvenienced by the mishap.

Social Media Amplifies Public Outrage
The incident’s visibility was heightened by viral social media posts, where some users accused Virgin Atlantic of mishandling communications.
Passengers complained of the lack of in-person announcements and support at the baggage claim area. One TikTok user commented, “There were children with poo all over them,” fueling further backlash despite official clarifications.
Virgin Atlantic has since reiterated that passengers have been contacted individually, with support provided for cleaning services, compensation claims, and detailed instructions to ensure passenger safety and satisfaction.
