After the end of the Cold War and the enlargement of NATO, Austria joined the EU, but the country did not get free of the belief that its close, even subordinate relations with Russia were both needed and desirable for it. From energy to espionage, Austria continues to operate - as we read - as “a Russian tunnel to Europe not by accident, but by choice.”
