U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance believes that the people of Greenland want to be independent of Denmark, and the island's relations with the United States can be discussed after its separation from the kingdom.
"I believe they want to be independent of Denmark. erstwhile they do, we will be able to talk about the relation with the United States," said Vance tv Newsmax.
U.S. president Donald Trump spoke about the necessity to join Greenland in the United States as early as December 2024, although no political organization in Greenland, and the vast majority of the island's population has been in favour of joining the United States. The fresh Greenland Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has already stated that the United States will not accept the island and Greenland will decide its future itself.
Last week, Greenland was visited by an American delegation led by Vance. During his visit to the U.S. military base on the island, he criticized the Danish authorities for deficiency of resources to defend Greenland from threats and keep the American base. Danish abroad Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen responded to Vance's statements. He turned to the Americans, condemning the criticism of Copenhagen by Vance for the wording he had chosen, and proposing to discuss the issue of expanding US military presence in Greenland.
In March Trump stated that Greenland would "in 1 way or another" be under the control of the United States and promised the island's inhabitants wealth if they joined the United States.
Greenland was a colony of Denmark until 1953. She is inactive part of the kingdom, but in 2009 she gained autonomy that gives her the ability to govern and make independent decisions in interior politics.
