U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance warned the European Commission on Thursday of imposing penalties on the X Elona Musk platform. As he said, the EU should support freedom of speech alternatively than "attack US companies" for no reason.PAP

U.S. Senator J.D. Vance warned the European Commission against imposing financial penalties on the X platform. In a sharp entry published on a billionaire portal, Elon Muska criticised EU regulations on freedom of speech and accused Brussels of attacking American companies.

"There are rumours that the EU Commission will impose a 100 million dollars on X for deficiency of censorship. The EU should support freedom of speech alternatively than attacking American companies for nothing" - wrote Vance on X. The Senator went further in his criticism, comparing the European Union to the USSR and accusing European regulations of censorship.

Vance's message refers to reports coming up for months about the European Commission's planned sanctions against platform X. "New York Times" reported in April of this year about a possible punishment exceeding EUR 1 billion, although the European Commission has not confirmed this information so far.

EC proceedings against X

The European Commission opened six proceedings against Platform X last year in connection with possible violations of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). 3 of them are inactive in progress, and in 3 cases the EC has already issued preliminary assessments of infringements last year.

Among another things, the EC accuses X of deficiency of transparency in advertising targeting. European Commission Vice-President Henna Virkunnen announced last November her intention to end the ongoing proceedings against X.

Background trade tensions

US Trade Minister Howard Lutnick suggested on Tuesday that the European Union must "let go" to American technological giants in order to scope a trade agreement. This position fits into a broader pattern of criticism - the Trump administration and the president himself had repeatedly attacked the EU for imposing penalties on American technology companies.
