Czech president Vaclav Klaus sent a letter to Robert Fico, president of the SMER party, who has a chance of winning the Slovak elections on 30 September. Here's what it says.
Mr President,
We closely follow pre-election debates and the full atmosphere in Slovakia. We are afraid about this and we see in your success the chance for Slovakia to stay a democratic country and stay itself. Violent attacks on you and your organization – see today's disruption to your press conference – are a reason for our concern.
We agree with you that it is crucial to trust on Slovakian citizens, on Slovak voters and not on comments in the fresh York Times or another abroad media, including Czech media.
We believe that the results of the Slovak elections are crucial not only for Slovakia itself, not only for further improvement in Central Europe but besides throughout Europe. They will besides affect the Czech Republic.
Consider this letter as an expression of our support at the end of the election campaign. Although media reports may seem that you have no supporters in our country, we can assure you that you do not.
