The designation of Somaliland by Israel – repercussions. Ambassador Krzysztof Płominski

ISRAEL IN THE EARTH OF SOMALIA – i.e. in the Republic of Somaliland, the separatist state of the national Republic of Somalia, so far benefiting mainly from the support of the United arabian Emirates and Taiwan – having all the attributes of statehood beyond the global designation it has just received from Israel.

The designation of Somaliland by Israel, along with the establishment of embassies and the replacement of ambassadors, signals a change of power arrangement in the Horn of Africa, a strategical area of global importance, invaded by military bases of 8 states. It reaffirms Israel's position in the region as a consequence of a series of events related to the war in Gaza and becoming a regional superpower. Capable of shaping reality in a wide neighbourhood according to his business. But besides decently reading the American National safety strategy encouraging closest partners in the mediate East to do U.S. work in conflict resolution and taking matters into their own hands.

This is not only a formal diplomatic success entering the Abrahamic knowing process. It besides opens the way to grow influences throughout the Horn of Africa and, more broadly, to establish a permanent military presence, to participate in shipping control in the Gulf of Aden – on 1 of the most crucial maritime routes and to influence the situation in the Arabian Peninsula. Above all, in Yemen, where increasingly visible disintegration processes are taking place with destabilisation and humanitarian crisis. The coast of Somaliland is besides vital for Ethiopia, which in 2024 was ready to recognise the authorities in Hargeia in exchange for access to the sea, but withdrew under global pressure. Finally, it is hard not to emphasize that Somaliland is 1 of the main destinations in the Israeli plans for the resettlement of Gaza.

Recognition promotes consolidation of the statehood of Somaliland, which itself faces the movements of secession opponents operating in the east of that territory. It makes it hard and, in fact, overturns the prospects of restoring the integrity of the Somali Republic within the limits prior to the actual dissolution after 1991, and inactive impossible under the existing conditions. The example will undoubtedly be contagious. another Somali secession territories seeking statehood – Punt and Jubaland, as well as separatists in the wider neighbourhood, including Sudan, are waiting in line. This is besides an additional challenge for Somalia itself, fighting Al-Shabab and another muslim terrorist groups, criticized by D. Trump, and supported in maintaining unity by most African and arabian countries, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia. And besides by the EU, mostly not visible in the region.

The Somali experimentation with giving parts of the state a advanced autonomy at the expense of centralization is experiencing an irreversible crisis and is simply a reflection material not only in Africa. And not just for the states.

There are many indications that the dynamics of events in the mediate East will accelerate again.
