An armed rocket breached Polish airspace and fell on Lublin. Donald Tusk estimated that Russian was very likely, and then thanked EU and NATO leaders for their solidarity and willingness to help. For Poland it is another hard test of the tightness of defence of its own sky.
Rocket over Poland
Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported in English that the rocket that breached Polish airspace on Thursday and fell on the Lublin region was armed. According to the head of government, it was a Russian object with large probability. Tusk thanked the leaders of the European Union and NATO countries for their solidarity and their declared willingness to help.
Political certainty must not be replaced at this stage. The origin of the rocket must be yet confirmed by examining the debris and analyzing its flight path. At the same time, the fact that an armed rocket was placed over Poland is serious enough. The state border was breached and the threat reached Polish territory.
An Allied Reaction in the Air
The Associated Press reported, citing a spokesperson for NATO military command in Belgium, that 2 fighters, a strike chopper and 2 another aircraft were picked up in consequence to the threat. Ground defenses were besides launched. The rocket disappeared from the radar, and the chopper crew found a likely site of collapse on agricultural grounds in Lublin Voivodeship.
According to the AP study in the event, no 1 was injured and no harm was reported. However, they cannot close the discussion on the effectiveness of Polish air defence. Poles have the right to know erstwhile the object was detected, how long it remained over our territory and why it was not disabled before the fall. Answers should come after an operational analysis, without propaganda fever and without sweeping uncomfortable questions under the carpet.
The Russian war is coming closer
The incidental occurred during another Russian rocket and drone attack on Ukraine. Moscow's war has long posed direct risks to border countries. Poland cannot get utilized to alarms, airspace violations and weapons debris falling on our side of the border.
The population of east voivodships and the credibility of the state are at stake. The Alliance is simply a pillar of deterrence, but Warsaw's first work remains to build its own layered air defense, efficient reconnaissance and clear consequence procedures. The solidarity of partners helps. However, we must defender the Polish sky effectively.
