The U.S. Navy is about to begin escorting tankers passing through the Ormuz Strait," US energy minister Chris Wright announced on Fox News. As he stressed, the operation will begin "as early as possible", although no commercial vessel has so far requested specified protection.
According to Wright, presently shipping through the strategical strait linking the Persian Gulf to the arabian Sea is halted. He added that the U.S. armed forces focus primarily on actions against Iran.
The day before, president Donald Trump announced the anticipation of US Navy escorting oil tankers and making the US insurance strategy available to carriers operating in the region.
The block of the Ormuz Strait had previously declared the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, threatening to destruct any unit attempting to cross the trail. The UN estimates that around 20,000 sailors were imprisoned as a consequence of the closure of the Strait. Around 20% of global oil is transported through Ormuz.
