Donald Trump's administration takes further steps to end favouring renewable energy sources (RES) at the expense of unchangeable sources specified as oil and natural gas. The fresh government aims to increase the extraction of natural resources, which aims to strengthen the American economy and lower energy prices.

"Drill, baby, Drill" – Back to Energy Independence

Donald Trump, inactive during the presidential campaign, promised to change the US energy policy course, criticizing Joe Biden's administration for overfocusing on climate ideology. In his opinion, restrictive rules limited the improvement of the oil and gas industries, which negatively affected the competitiveness of the economy.

"Dead and ideologically motivated government hampers the improvement of these resources" – Trump argued, stressing that the United States has immense deposits of natural resources.

New regulations: End of RES relief

The Interior Department, under the direction of Secretary Doug Burgum, introduced changes aimed at facilitating energy companies access to public land for oil and gas extraction.

The department’s communication reads:

"This change will destruct reductions in rates that favour the improvement of renewable energy at the expense of another energy sources."

Burgum explained that the decision was based on the Trump implementing regulation, signed immediately after its office in January.

Why is the wind and sun not enough?

Secretary Burgum openly criticized wind and solar energy, calling it ‘unprofitable and uncertain’ energy sources. In his opinion, fresh regulations will abolish "excess unilateral restrictions on conventional energy sources specified as oil, gas and critical minerals", which will make full usage of the possible of American resources.

What's next?

The proposed changes now request to be reviewed by the Information and Regulatory Office and subsequently submitted to public consultation.

In April, the department besides announced an improvement in the process of issuing mining permits, which is expected to increase oil production, especially in the Gulf of Mexico. It is estimated that mining in this region can increase by up to 10%.
