Warsaw Police Stop 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen, suspected of extortion from 60-year-old gold and money of full value close PLN 350 000. The detention took place during regular checks – the man turned out to be nervous, and in his luggage a crush was found from an investment fraud. A 60-year-old was manipulated by promises of fast and "safe" profits, giving the largest part of his assets to criminals. The detainee is in custody, threatening him to 10 years in prison.
A Ukrainian stole gold from a Polish man of large value. This case echoes widely in the media – and rightly so. However, it is hard to analyse it in isolation from the context in which the modern migration policy of Poland operates.
Since the beginning of the large wave of migration after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, about 1.55 million Ukrainian citizens have arrived and settled in Poland – this is the largest group of foreigners in the country. The inflow of specified a large number of people in a short time, mostly in working age, creates strong social tensions. Many Poles feel the force of the labour market, the public burden and the change in the social structure. Criminal incidents, specified as fraud on seniors or anonymous statistics, can be utilized in public debate as arguments for a stricter approach to migration.
The criticisms of the current migration policy frequently trust on akin experiences. Since 2022 local media reports have noted cases in which Ukrainian citizens participated in the fraud of money from older people; akin groups have besides been detained in another cities where criminals, utilizing the "police" method, have defrauded nearly a million zlotys from elder citizens.
Some commentators and politicians view the beginning of borders and the fast granting of work permits without prior thorough safety checks as an error. In their assessment, this involves the hazard of introducing people into the community who are not adequately verified and integrate selectively and in utmost cases engage in criminal activities.
The case of the fraud described by the media is not the only crime committed by foreigners in the territory of Poland, but does not give a full image of the situation. The criticism of liberal migration policy, especially for those of draft age, is based on real social and economical concerns. These people don't assimilate and alternatively of working, they relate to the criminal world.
Law and policy should defend citizens and guarantee their safety. The regulation should be clear – either you learn the language, assimilate with the Polish majority and follow the law, or you return to your country.
