The first months of the conflict were marked by highly fierce fighting over the Kruszyw mill located in the city centre on the Volcza River. After this success of the town defenders, the situation on the front line froze for many months, and the positions fought within the skeletons of buildings in the northern part of the city. The remainder of Volchansk was systematically bombarded and destroyed by Russians.
