The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it had launched an investigation into platforms offering pornographic content,” said EC spokesperson Tom Renier during a briefing in Brussels.

"The investigation was initiated against websites Pornhub, Stripchat, XNXX and XVideos in connection with the alleged infringement of the Digital Services Act (DSA)," he said.

According to Rainier, the investigation was initiated to defend minors.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) entered into force on 1 November 2022 and began to apply in the EU from May 2023. This law, according to the authors' intention, aims to make digital markets more equitable and competitive, giving greater choice and freedom to end users.

The European Commission has indicated that it will monitor effective compliance with the DMA obligations. If the company fails to fulfil its obligations, the EC may impose a fine of up to 10% of the full global turnover of the company for the erstwhile financial year, and in the event of repeated infringements, up to 20% of specified turnover. In the case of systematic infringements, the Commission will take additional remedies, including a decision requiring the company to sale its activities in the EU.
