On 2 December, the European Parliament will hold a public proceeding on the European Citizens' Initiative, which calls for the financing of abortion for women from EU countries. Brussels calls it "enhancing access to wellness services". Is it truly about Health – or a way to circumvent national laws protecting lives?
The European Commission has already met with the authors of the initiative on 1 October, indicating that it does not treat it simply as a theoretical request. After proceeding in the EP, she will have until 1 March 2026 to decide whether and how to implement the proposal.
The proposed solutions may in practice bypass Polish right protecting life. As noted by Jakub Baltroszewicz of the “One of Us” Foundation, possible decisions of the Union could lead to a situation where:
“The Polish female who wants to have an abortion will be able to go to Germany, France or the Netherlands and do so at the expense of the European taxpayer, or each of us.”
In fact, it is simply a prediction of a mechanics in which the law in force in Poland becomes only a provision in the Code, and actual decisions are made outside the state.
It is so not just about the financial dimension, although it is besides important. The key issue is much deeper: can the EU institutions take action which in practice invalidate decisions of the democratically elected national parliament?
Hearing That Can Set a Direction
Public proceeding alone is not a vote, but in practice it is simply a test of political sentiment. The European Commission is watching closely these developments - the stronger the support for the initiative, the more bold it will be to take further action.
That is why the activity of Euro MPs from countries where the law protecting life is peculiarly crucial is so important. Their presence and clear attitude depends on whether there is simply a clear opposition to the usage of EU funds to finance abortion activities. They are expected to make it clear that European taxpayers' resources cannot be utilized in a way that is contrary to the values of many citizens.
It should besides be recalled that Euro MPs do not act as passive observers. They are representatives of society – including those for whom the protection of life is the foundation of moral and legal order. It is at specified moments that their voice is of real importance.
Mobilising citizens
There is increasingly a question of the limits of European integration and whether the financing of abortion trips can be considered as a form of support, or alternatively as an emphasis on countries with their own different regulations. The discussion is not loud in mainstream media, which is why in the social space there are calls for greater civic activity.
We encourage you to remind the MEPs of the importance of the forthcoming debate. It is worth noting that there is simply a request for a clear consequence – both a presence at the proceeding and a clear position. The mass sending of messages to Euro MPs can aid to show that Poles are aware of the forthcoming decisions and anticipate their representatives to act real.
Such mobilisation is not purely symbolic. It is simply a form of emphasis, but at the same time a reminder that decisions taken in Brussels straight affect the legal order and values of the associate States – besides Poland.
Poland does not lose its competence directly. Nobody makes us change the law. However, if the Union decides to finance abortion outside the borders of the countries where the rules for protecting human life are in force, they can be circumvented in practice. The rule is simple: a law that can easy be avoided ceases to work. That's what makes you anxious.
