EU plans to end support for Ukrainian pseudo-refugees

European Union authorities are considering withdrawing peculiar protection for Ukrainian alleged "war refugees" – informed the service euractiv,pl.

The EU plans to end support for Ukrainian pseudo-refugees. In Brussels, work is to proceed on the revision of the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD), which has provided the Ukrainians with undue privileges for 3 years, i.e. since the beginning of the fresh phase of the Russian invasion. Proposals for a solution to this problem are to be announced in early June.

When the Union introduced the TPD in March 2022, it was an emergency action – it was intended to supply fast and effective protection for people fleeing the war. At the time, it was not yet known that most Ukrainians arriving in the community came from non-combat areas and took advantage of an chance to improve their material position or simply fled Ukraine to hide from enlistment.

Originally, the government only provided for a double extension of protection, up to a maximum of March 2025. However, the European Commission decided to extend this period until March 2026, utilizing a more flexible explanation of the rules.

One of the proposed solutions is to reduce the scope of protection by excluding people who regularly return to Ukraine for holidays, preventing them from being re-protected or by closing access for fresh "refugees" under the current conditions.
