The EU has not included Apple Maps and Apple Ads with additional regulations

European Commission announcedthat Apple Maps and Apple Ads will not be considered as ‘gateways’ under the Digital Markets Directive (DMA).

According to the EC, both platforms do not have adequate scale to qualify as key intermediation between companies and end users. However, Apple as a full remains a ‘gatekeeper’.

This assessment is based on a number of factors, including a comparatively low overall rate of usage of Apple Maps in the EU and a very limited scale of Apple Ads’ online advertising activities in the EU.

However, shortly Apple Ads and Apple Maps can work more closely together – the company plans to display ads in Apple Maps' search results later this year.
