The Americans, together with the nipponese Maritime Self-Defense Forces, conducted the second SINKEX exercise this year in the Hawaiian Islands operational area, as part of which the erstwhile amphibious assault ship-dock ex-USS "Denver" was sunk. Interestingly, the American vessel was attacked not only by coastal anti-ship missiles, but besides by missiles fired from the HIMARS land-based artillery system. A fewer days earlier, an ex-American Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate was sunk in the same place as part of the first SINKEX exercise.
