Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart announced in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita” that the number of prisoners in Poland is expected to decrease by 20 thousand. She stressed that the prisons are now overcrowded and that action is needed to reduce the number of prisoners.

Ejchart besides reported that there had already been early releases of prisoners, which is part of a plan to mitigate the problem of overcrowding in prisons. This decision can be a key step in improving prison conditions and in managing the prison strategy more effectively.

According to the Deputy Minister, reducing the number of prisoners can bring various benefits, specified as improving the surviving conditions in prisons, reducing tension in the prison strategy and making more efficient usage of the resources allocated to criminal justice. However, it is besides crucial to guarantee that people who will be released early will be adequately monitored and supported to avoid recidivism and to guarantee their social reintegration," added Ejchart.
