THE large RIDE FOR MONTE CASSino
Nearly 160 clubs from Poland and abroad took part in a unique journey to Italy, culminating in the celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the conflict of Monte Cassino. The nine-day pilgrimage combined historical memory, patriotism and prayer, leading participants through places peculiarly crucial for both the past of Poland and the spiritual heritage of Christianity.
In the large Exit to Monte Cassino, organized by the Clubs “Polish Newspapers”, the club participants participated from Warsaw, Krakow, Kielce and Czestochowa, as well as representatives from abroad, including Australia, as well as sympathizers of “Polish Newspapers”. The organizers emphasized that it was not just a journey, but a common evidence of remembrance of the soldiers of the 2nd Polish Corps of General Władysław Anders and an expression of attachment to Polish past and faith.
The first days of the pilgrimage were highly high. The club members visited Rome and the Vatican, prayed at the tomb of St John Paul II, attended prayer in St Peter's Square and received the blessing of Pope Leon XIV. The programme besides included Assisi, where participants prayed at the grave of St. Francis and attended Mass celebrated in 1 of the chapels of the basilica.
“We will visit the Vatican, among another things. We will pray at the grave of Saint John Paul II. We will besides visit Rome and Assisi. And specified a culmination will be a visit to Monte Cassino, where we will participate in state ceremonies," said the president of the “Gazeta Polska” Clubs Ewa Wójcik, the organizer of the trip.
The most crucial minute of departure, however, was the anniversary celebrations at Monte Cassino with the participation of the president of Poland Karol Nawrocki and the first lady. The club “Gazeta Polska” participated in central celebrations, prayer at the Polish War Cemetery and in the field mass celebrated for the fallen soldiers. There was besides a joint trekking “The way of Memory” during which the presidential couple, scouts, youth and clubs “Gazeta Polska” shared a tour on Monte Cassino hill.
“For everyone, the most crucial point of this journey is Monte Cassino – the participants prepared for this event with large commitment, they have patriotic outfits, buttoned poppies, brought candles and flowers from Poland, which they want to lodge in the cemetery (...). This is an highly moving experience... Among the pilgrims are 3 sons of soldiers fighting at Monte Cassino. For them it is simply a peculiarly touching experience – their fathers fought here, but they could never visit this place after the war. Today, as older people, they can pay tribute to their fathers here for the first time," said Beata Drędź, president of the “Polish Gazeta” Club in Piotrków Trybunalski, co-organizer of the trip.
– We are going to pay tribute to the soldiers who fought for our freedom – the participants emphasized. I came here to marry my dad. He fought at Monte Cassino and was the boy of the regiment. He was 16 erstwhile the Soviets drove him from Hajnówka to Archangelsk. That's where he found out he could join Anders' army. He wanted to fight very much," another associate said. – I came to Monte Cassino due to the fact that Poles in Australia are patriots. I am the boy of the Warsaw insurgent. I have this work – said the Australian club.
Whole families and representatives of different generations participated in the pilgrimage. The youngest associate of the journey was 11 years old and the oldest associate was born in 1941. As the organizers emphasized, the departure became a symbol of intergenerational transfer of historical memory. – First of all, it is an highly Polish trip, moving, and at the same time the “Polish Newspapers” Clubs can make an amazing atmosphere. This is where you drive like a household – said Ewa Dzikowska.
During the pilgrimage, participants besides visited Loreto and Padua. Prayer, talks, sightseeing and patriotic celebrations gave a sense of unique community.
