Two puzzles around Smolensk. Lying 3 minutes before the crash

Witold Juras served as chargé d’affaires RP in Belarus. His book “Demon zza z between”, which tells about Belarus, Lukashenko and the mistakes of Polish policy towards Belarus, premiered on 12 October. Below we print a passage of it.

The telephone woke me this morning. The chief of the Russian department of our MFA Dariusz Górczyński called, who stayed at the airport in Smolensk. He informed me that "he will most likely land with you" (meaning Minsk) the President, due to the fact that it is bad weather and there is no certainty that the plane will land in Smolensk.

As I remember today, Dark clearly told me that the Russians had informed him that the plane had already tried to land once. This is so crucial that, as we know, nothing like this, that is, an effort to approach landing, took place. I checked the telephone records later, and our conversation was precisely 3 minutes before the crash. In another words, the lie arose before the disaster occurred. That doesn't mean the crash was an assassination. In my deepest belief, it was a tragic accident. This does not change the fact that this point should be clarified in my opinion. Unfortunately, the investigation was conducted in specified a way that 1 organization to the political dispute in Poland entrusted the good will of the Russians, to which it had no grounds (which was next).

On the another hand, the another side of our Polish-Polish war, alternatively of explaining what was to be explained, and settling the guilty mess, went into a paranoid communicative about the assassination and in addition to the assassination in which Donald Tusk himself would have had his fingers. It is an insult to reason, but it is besides an insult to Donald Tusk, whom I have never been a fan of, but which I have seen up close in Smolensk. Contrary to what is said on the written side, he did not grin at all, but appeared to be terrified of what he saw, and – this is an accusation – lost.

This is where I gotta explain why I got woken up on the telephone this Saturday morning. I met with a charge against the facility that we were not prepared for a possible landing of the president, even though Minsk was a alleged spare airport. This allegation is, of course, completely paranoid. On this basis, the Polish embassy in Berlin should fundamentally decision to an global airport in the capital city of Germany, due to the fact that Berlin is designated as a reserve airport for flights between Warsaw and Brussels, and to Brussels the Prime Minister, the President, or 1 of the ministers fly in rule all week. It was apparent that we did not anticipate the President, and as much as the US embassies in the countries over which the president of the United States is flying, we did not call at the airport.

When I heard that the plane with the president was expected to land in Minsk, I called the driver and told him to shave quickly, put on a suit and come for me in 15 minutes. I shaved myself and called my band at the same time. I was besides waiting for the confirmation announced by Dark Górczyński whether the plane would yet arrive in Minsk, or whether it managed to land. Minutes passed and no 1 called me. I tried calling Dark myself, but his telephone was inactive out of range.

That's another mystery. The aircraft did not cut down any cell telephone mast, but according to witness reports immediately after the crash, the phones stopped operating. So I called the embassy in Moscow. The telephone was received by the deputy ambassador and the head of the Political Department, and a fewer months earlier my boss, the councillor – Minister Piotr Marciniak, who said there was a disaster. At this point, the connection was interrupted. Standing next to me, my wife asked me what happened. I replied that “some kind of disaster” and added that “probably our wreath did not take distant or something like that from us” and I was inactive preparing to leave. The minute I tied the tie, I was yet able to connect with Dark Górczyński, who, being clearly in shock, said, “Well, yes, the crash crashed.” I said, “How did this crash?” In response, I heard, "Well, the pi... crashed, there are dead bodies everywhere." I point out here that the word that Darek utilized is not due to any disinvolvement or disrespect, but to the very clear shock he was in. His voice broke and he kept repeating the words “Jesus” and “No dead bodies, dead bodies.” At 1 point, he began to tell me that he saw his hand torn off and that these people had to be laid together somehow. What he said was so shocking that I repeated his words: “But what corpses? But how is it a hand?’ And it wasn't until I saw my wife's look in the mirror where I tied my tie, that I realized what happened.

The first man I called was our Ambassador to Azerbaijan Krzysztof Krajewski, with whom I was friends, who had close relations with him due to the active policy of president Lech Kaczyński in the Caucasian direction. I told Christopher that the plane had crashed, and according to a colleague who was on site, no 1 survived. Christopher, erstwhile he heard this, began to say to his increasingly broken voice: “But what are you saying, what are you saying? Oh, no. Come on. Oh, no.’ And he cried.

"Talking about the Russian's goodwill has already become absurd"

When we were going from the Russian border to Smolensk, at any point we noticed that we were ahead of the bus that Jarosław Kaczyński and the PiS delegation were driving. We saw this clearly due to the fact that they were driving with escorts and could not miss the bus in the patrol cars. I was driving in 1 car with Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak and Minister of Defence Bogdan Klich. I informed them that there was a situation of this kind and that the Russians were clearly holding back the column crossing with Jarosław Kaczyński. erstwhile we got to the airport, we found out that the PiS delegation was not allowed into the airport. Both politicians mentioned above were besides informed about this, both of whom besides told Donald Tusk. Talking about the Russians' goodwill has already become absurd. All members of the government delegation voiced outrage at the Russian behaviour.

“The best photographic documentation taken immediately after the crash is available to Lukashenko”

At the crash site, at any point I noticed that both Belarusian drivers, whom we employed at our embassy in Minsk, were equipped with superprofessional cameras, utilizing which they took pictures of all part of metallic and all part of airplane. They besides photographed the bodies. A day later, I asked them to give me copies of these photos, for which 1 of them, without hiding who he was actually working for (it was clear that he worked for the Belarusian KGB), he said, “Mr. Counselor, you know that this was not my private camera, and you know that I don’t have these pictures anymore”. I asked him how many pictures he took. He said he didn't know, but he got instructions that if he had the chance to take a 1000 pictures, he had to take a thousand, and if he had 2 thousand, he had to do 2 thousand. I am inactive convinced that Alexander Lukashenko has the best photographic documentation taken immediately after the crash. I am besides profoundly convinced – that, as it is customary – if there was anything in these photos that he could usage against the Russians, of course he would usage it. Not to uncover anything, of course, but to get a fewer dollars lower gas price with these pictures.

After watching the crash site – that's erstwhile the celebrated photograph of Donald Tusk and Vladimir Putin was taken, on which Donald Tusk seems to be smiling – we went to the right airport (here I gotta explain that Donald Tusk evidently did not grin for a moment. I looked through pictures from my father's ceremony once, and I was terrified that I looked like I had a grin on my face. This photograph was taken at a time erstwhile 1 of my father's friends, expressing his condolences, said something highly touching and I made a grimace that possibly made a grin for a millisecond). On the spot, already at the airport, Prime Minister Tusk went to talk to Vladimir Putin. We, together with colleagues from the embassies in Moscow and Minsk, but besides in the company of Minister Klich, commented on another provocative behaviour of Russians. The fact that the Russians behave increasingly provocatively, which was expressed by holding up the column with Jarosław Kaczyński, not letting him into the airport, moving parts of the wreckage, was apparent to everyone and lies to everyone who claims that the state authorities did not know that the goodwill of the Russians could not be expected, and even on the contrary, that the bad will of the Russians should be assumed. This was already evident.

"He raised his glass and inspired the song devoted to the triumph of the USSR"

When we arrived with Donald Tusk's delegation back to Vitebsk, I knew he was waiting for us at the site of the politician of the Vitebsk Oblast, the later Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Aleksander Kosiniec, who wanted to express his condolences on behalf of Alexander Lukashenko Donald Tusk. The problem was that the delegation did not have the will to talk to Kosien and went straight to the plane, bypassing the airport building where the politician was waiting. However, I felt that we couldn't behave this way towards the Belarusians, so I asked Counselor Bear to apologize to the governor, but at the same time he brought him to the plane and contrary to his decision, I led him to a gathering that lasted respective minutes. Kosininiec gave his condolences and assured his cooperation.

When the plane with Donald Tuski had already flown to Poland, we went to the airport building, where a tiny treat was waiting for us. There was nothing inappropriate about it, due to the fact that we were indeed respective hours without any food. At any point the politician said he would like to toast to the memory of president Lech Kaczyński. I had my doubts here, but we couldn't say no. So we picked up our glasses and we wet our mouth. After a toast for the President's memory, another toast appeared – this time for the memory of the first lady. Then another individual that the Belarusians mentioned. Our hosts have besides noted that we are simply dipping our lips in glasses. Therefore, at 1 point there was no choice but to drink at least in any part. Our drinking rate and Belarusians differed. At 1 point the deputy politician of Vitebsk, a very good gentleman, any years later convicted of corruption (maybe that's why he loved it), said he would like to sing a song that "links our nations together." I thought it would be a church song or a church song. The deputy politician picked up a glass and infused the part devoted to the russian Union's triumph in the war with Germany and began singing: “the day of poverty, the day of poverty”, meaning “the day of victory, the day of victory”! I froze. Fortunately, the governor, who drew attention to his deputy, did not sing those words that day. For the record, the deputy politician was not going to insult us. In Belarus, the song at 9 May is fundamentally the equivalent of Ave Maria.

“It was only during this mass that tears flowed to both me and my colleagues”

We reached Minsk around 4:00 in the morning. After a fewer hours of sleep, we went to the cathedral where Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusewicz celebrated Mass in the intention of the victims of the Smolensk catastrophe. It was not until this Mass that I and my colleagues were crying. Before that, we were just at work. Archbishop Kondrusewicz gave 1 of the wisest, most beautiful, most thoughtful and most touching sermons I have always heard in my life. On the same day of the afternoon, we began to organize flights of further aircraft and car columns. The mess was the same as always. As I callback today, a dramatic text from 1 of my colleagues in the embassy’s Political Department said: “No conclusions have been drawn and no 1 will always draw. So that God's hand may defend us, so that we may board any government plane, train, car, bus or whatever it is, and fall apart in the future.

"PiS alternatively of sanitation offered only another mess management team"

A period later around 11:00 p.m., I was woken by a call from the Deputy Minister of abroad Affairs of Belarus, who apologized for calling at this time and asked if I was aware that president Komorowski was in Moscow. I was aware, of course, due to the fact that I signed a diplomatic note asking for approval to fly over the territory of Belarus. erstwhile I heard his question, I was shivering due to the fact that I thought that since the Deputy abroad Minister was calling at this hour, that means something must have happened. Turns out, in a way, nothing happened. The Deputy Minister asked me if it was actual that president Komorowski on his way back to Poland intends to come to Vitebsk, that is, the territory of Belarus, and from Vitebsk to fly to Poland. I didn't know that. The Deputy Minister informed me that the Belarusian side had received specified information from the national Protection Service, the Russian equivalent of the BOR, who contacted the safety Service of the president of Belarus, or the Belarusian equivalent of the BOR, to find the issue of crossing the border. Only that the Belarusians knew nothing about the visit of the acting president of Poland. I, as head of the facility, didn't know anything either.

I called my erstwhile boss, who informed me that in fact during the visit of Bronisław Komorowski, who went to the Russian capital to participate in the triumph parade in Red Square, a "spontaneous" decision was made to go from Moscow to Katyń and Smolensk and not to drive back to Moscow, but to drive 80 km to Vitebsk and from there to fly to Poland. The problem is that this spontaneous decision was forgotten to inform the Polish embassy in Belarus... Imagine a situation in which the U.S. embassy would learn about president Biden's visit, who spontaneously decided to come from Vilnius to Warsaw after the NATO summit, but nobody had the thought to inform the American embassy in Warsaw and the Polish authorities... I am far from a written communicative about the state of Polish affairs under governments another than the Law and Justice. But at the same time, after what I witnessed, no 1 will tell me that the Polish state under the regulation of the PO worked. The another thing is that PiS alternatively of sanitization offered only another mess management team, and worse, decided to add any of its own disorder to the already existing mess.
