Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on the fresh German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to keep the Schengen rules and focus on securing the EU's external borders.
"Our concern is and must be the behaviour of Schengen. We realize the request to increase control. But this increased control should be directed primarily at the external borders of the European Union," said Tusk to journalists after gathering German Chancellor Friedrich Merzem.
At the same time, he told his German counterpart that Poland is independently guarding the EU border with Russia and Belarus.
"I believe that I will find in you a partner who understands that guarding the European Union's border with Belarus and Russia, that is, Poland with these countries, is simply a common goal and a common work for all Europe, namely Germany. I want everyone to realize that Poland takes on the full burden of work for securing this border," Tusk said.
Germany has introduced border controls at all its land borders last year, including borders with Schengen countries. German Home Minister Nancy Feather justified this regulation with a advanced level of illegal migration, as well as protection against muslim terrorists and cross-border crime. The extension of border controls since mid-September last year afraid borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Prior checks were already carried out at the border with France in connection with the Olympic Games in Paris. Border checks with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland have been going on since mid-October last year and in autumn 2015 they were introduced at the land border between Germany and Austria.
