ISTANBUL- Flag carrier of Türkiye, Turkish Airlines (TK) flight from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is making a U-turn back to Istanbul on December 25, 2024.

According to reports, the Turkish Airlines flight TK203 is making a precautionary landing amid technical issues.

According to Hava Sosyla Medya, The Turkish Airlines #TK203 flight from Istanbul to Seattle is returning to Istanbul due to a technical issue. The aircraft involved in the incident is a 3.1-year-old Airbus A350 and is registered as TC-LGJ.

Further, this is not an emergency, and technical issues can happen, and returning to the hub is a standard precaution to ensure smooth operations for the return flight.

The flight will continue with a different aircraft, resulting in a delay for the return TK204 Seattle to Istanbul flight.

#TK203 Returning to Istanbul

According to Flight Radar 24 data, the Turkish Airlines flight took off from Istanbul at 12:41 PM UTC. It usually takes around 12 hours to complete the journey between Istanbul and Seattle.

After being airborne for around four hours and 30 minutes, the flight reported some technical issues with the aircraft, the exact issue is not known yet.

At that point, the aircraft was flying near the northeast coast of Iceland. It could have diverted to Keflavík Airport (KEF), but if the technical fault is not serious in nature they can return to base.

At the time of writing, the flight is expected to land shortly back at IST in some minutes.

Turkish Airlines Flight TK1668 executed an emergency landing at Hamburg Airport on July 6, 2023, following a cargo compartment fire warning. The Airbus A321 had departed Hamburg for Istanbul at 5:43 AM.

The flight crew received the smoke or fire alert from cargo sensors shortly after takeoff. They immediately contacted air traffic control and initiated return procedures to Hamburg Airport. The aircraft’s relatively low fuel load enabled a quick return.

The Hamburg-Istanbul route spans 1,960 kilometers, with the flight originally scheduled to arrive in Istanbul at 8:35 AM UTC. The emergency occurred during the initial climb phase of the flight.

Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 shows the aircraft made a U-turn toward Hamburg after the warning activation. The crew prioritized a rapid return to ensure passenger safety.

Similarly, Turkish Airlines Boeing 777-300ER made an emergency landing in Vienna after smoke emerged from a galley during its Istanbul-Montreal flight in July 2024.

The cabin crew detected smoke from one of the aircraft’s galleys after two hours and thirty minutes into the flight. The flight crew contacted air traffic control as they entered Polish airspace and diverted to Vienna, where Turkish Airlines maintains regular operations.

The aircraft, registered as TC-JJM, dumped fuel near Vienna before landing safely at 3:14 PM UTC. The 13.4-year-old Boeing 777-300ER, powered by GE90 engines, underwent inspection and maintenance at Vienna Airport.

Turkish Airlines confirmed the quick resolution of the galley issue after the safe landing. The aircraft remained in Vienna for 17 hours before returning to Istanbul to resume normal service.
