The 3 largest political groups in the European Parliament (PE) have changed their position and now want to suspend ratification of the EU-US trade agreement. The European People's organization (EPP), Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and Renew Europe made this decision in consequence to Donald Trump's threats concerning Greenland. Without the support of these groups, the agreement will not get a majority in the EP.
Manfred Weber, leader of the European People's organization and German Euro MP, announced a return on the X platform on the weekend. «EPP supports the EU-US trade agreement, but given Donald Trump's threats to Greenland, its approval is not possible at this stage. Customs duties on US products of 0 percent should be suspended”, wrote Weber.
The EPP has so far been the largest group in the EP and has late supported the continuation of the ratification process. The committee vote was scheduled for January 27. The agreement provided for zero tariffs for US products.
Other groups reactions
Iratxe Garcia Perez, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats and the Spanish Euro MP, besides spoke on the X platform. «We must act now: suspend negotiations on the EU-US trade agreement (...). The EU will not be intimidated”, she wrote.
According to the Polish Press Agency, both Socialists and Democrats and the Renewal Group are in favour of suspending the ratification process. The political groups are to meet in Strasbourg on Wednesday to discuss further steps.
