Donald Trump's words about Iran rapidly translated into oil prices, the dollar rate and inflation questions in Poland. And as the planet trembled after another sharp speech from Washington, we had disputes over the judges of the Constitutional Court, the billion consequences of pandemic decisions and the fresh run ideas of Mateusz Morawiecki.
Trump says markets are reacting
The strongest point of the week was Donald Trump's speech. There were threats to Iran, there were besides words about diplomacy, but the markets heard 1 thing first: another escalation. The oil price spike, the dollar strengthening, and the very real question is, how much are we going to pay at the stations for a while? This is no longer abstract geopolitics. It's a war that's seen in fuel prices, inflation and home budgets.
Political dispute over courts
In Poland it was equally hot around the Constitutional Court. The dispute over how and before whom the judges are to take the vow grew to the rank of another political feud. The problem is, it's not just semantics or procedural details. It is simply a state that is to act efficiently and predictablely, especially where a citizen should be guaranteed independency from politics.
6 billion for vaccines
The issue of Pfizer's vaccines is besides a strong one. Poland is to pay PLN 6 billion for the doses ordered, but not received. This is simply a gigantic amount, especially today, erstwhile the budget is strained to the limits. The most honest diagnosis is brutal: the order itself may have been legitimate, but the deficiency of reception and the deficiency of settlement of this decision is discredited by the state. In this story, political trenches explain little. There's a bill that the citizens will pay anyway.
Morawiecki hands out. Uncovered promise
Against this background, the proposal "500 plus per capita" sounds like a classical election sausage. Effectively sold, but with no answer to the most crucial question: where to get money for it? In times of deficit, advanced defence costs and rising social spending, all fresh promise should start with sources of funding, not with a catchy slogan.
