President Donald Trump signed an executive regulation that bans alleged "gender affirmation care" for people under the age of 19. It includes both the prohibition of hormone blockers and the conduct of surgical sex change surgery in children and adolescents.
The fresh law besides requires enforcement of laws against doctors, medical institutions and states that have supported specified practices.
The regulation states:
"In all countries doctors mutilate and sterilize an expanding number of children susceptible to influence, citing extremist and false claims that adults can change the sex of a kid through a series of irreversible medical interventions. This dangerous trend will be a stain on the past of our Nation and must end.”
The president stressed that the aim of the fresh regulations is to defend children from harmful procedures:
"The policy of the United States is that they will not finance, sponsor, promote, aid or support the alleged transit of a kid from 1 sex to another and will strictly enforce all laws that prohibit or restrict these destructive and life-changing procedures."
Scope of the prohibition
The prohibition shall include any medical intervention in persons under 19, including:
- prescribing puberty blockers,
- breast removal surgery,
- procedures to change physical appearance to adapt it to a sex identity different from biological,
- the removal of sexual organs.
President Trump explicitly criticised the guidelines of the planet Association of Professionals for Transsexual wellness (WPATH), calling them “unbelievers” and accusing them of promoting “cruel chemical and surgical mutilations” under the pretext of medical necessity.
Enforcement and legislative actions
Trump administration ordered national agencies to:
- repeal or change policies based on the WPATH guidelines,
- a review of the literature on best practices in the wellness of children with sex dysphoria,
- prosecution of cases of medical misinformation related to transit,
- coordination of law enforcement in the fight against female genital mutilation.
Provisions are besides planned to enable parents and children to search redress against healthcare professionals liable for specified procedures, with an extended limitation period.
Donald Trump, referring to the social media regulation, stated:
"Our nation will no longer finance, sponsor, promote, help, or support alleged sex affirmation care, which has already ruined besides many precious lives. These barbarian procedures should never take place!”
Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) besides praised the President's decision:
"So-called sex affirmation care means everything but care. Allowing young people whose brains are not full developed to go through life-changing, irreversible procedures is pure madness. This is not a question of politics. It is simply a substance of good and evil.”
The Trump administration's decision has sparked a wide public debate, stressing the importance of protecting children from irreversible medical decisions that can affect their wellness and life forever.
