Trump wants to solve the conflict of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia about the Nile

Donald Trump announced to take action in relation to the increasing conflict over the Nile. In a letter addressed to Egypt's president Abd al-Fatthaha as-Sisi, he declared his desire to scope an agreement on the large Dam of Ethiopia's Revival (GERD).

I very much hope that this dispute will not turn into a serious armed conflict – Trump wrote, proposing a solution to allocate resources: access to water for Egypt and Sudan and inexpensive electricity for Ethiopia.

What is GERD?

GERD, or the large Rebirth Dam of Ethiopia, is Africa's largest hydro-energy investment, completed last year. The dam has a capacity of 74 billion cubic meters and covers an area of 1874 km2. Since the beginning of its construction in 2011, however, the task has become a origin of tension between the countries of the region.

Multiannual dispute

Sudan is afraid that the Roseires Dam, located about 110 kilometres down the river, may be threatened by large water discharges from Ethiopia if they are not decently coordinated. Egypt, on the another hand, opposed the investment from the outset, claiming that it would lead to a crucial simplification in the Nile level in its lower gear and thus restrict the country's access to water resources.

The bilateral talks between Egypt and Ethiopia on filling the tank continued for a year from 2016, but failed due to the inability to make a common position. Sudan attempted mediation in the dispute, but his efforts failed.
