Tragic event at Ustka-Wicko Marine: Soldier drowned in Baltic

On Monday evening, a tragic incidental occurred at the Ustka-Wicko Marine camp, where a 27-year-old soldier was kidnapped by the waves during a bath in the Baltic Sea. The event ended in a tragic finale, as despite intense searches, the soldier was not found. The military police confirmed that the man drowned.

Major Tomasz Zygmunt, a press officer of the Szczecin Military Gendarmerie branch, reported: “The event took place on military grounds, at the tallness of Wick Morski. The findings indicate that the soldier drowned". The search and rescue action lasted for respective hours, but in the course of it the man was not found.

Rescue Action

On Tuesday before noon, the waters where the soldier was missing were searched by a Navy helicopter. However, WOPR and SAR were no longer active in these activities. Press spokesperson for the SAR Marine Search and Rescue Service, Rafał Goeck, explained: “If necessary, our units will engage in military-led activities.” Goeck added that the search involving WOPR and SAR rescuers continued on Monday until 10:30 p.m., and the action began after 20 p.m., erstwhile the WOPR Water Rescue Coordination Centre in Szczecin received information about a man kidnapped by waves.

Rafal Goeck reported: “We received a study that there is simply a man in the water in the area of the sea’s Wicko Marines. Rescuers from Ustka and Darlov went to the scene. The chopper was involved. Unfortunately, the man was not found.” Rescue and search took part in rescue ships “Taifun” from Darlov and “Orkan” from Uska, rescuers on the pontoon, firefighters, policemen and soldiers. Goeck stressed that the conditions in the Baltic were difficult: “The sea state: 3 to 4 (3-4 degrees on the Beaufort scale). A red flag is displayed in bathing areas, under specified conditions," recalled the spokesperson SAR.

The missing 27-year-old is simply a soldier of voluntary primary military service from the 18th Reconnaissance Battalion of White Podlaski, serving since June this year. On Monday night, he went to the beach of Wicko Marine camp to take a bath. Circumstances of the event are explained under the supervision of the territory Prosecutor's Office (military department) Szczecin Niebushevo.

Polgon Ustka-Wicko Morskie, where this tragic accident occurred, is the Central Polygon of the Air Force of 4,000 hectares, located on the shore of the Baltic Sea between Ustka and Jarosław.
