In mid-September, Tomasz Chyła Quintet will execute at concerts in China and South Korea as part of the JAZZ POLSku task “About the World/Stop Asia”.

The tour will run from 11 to 22 September, and will consist of 11 concerts in Shanghai and Seoul, among others.

Tomasz Chła Quintet is 1 of the most intriguing and uncompromising bands of the young generation of Polish jazz. For respective years they have bravely explored improvised music, drawing inspiration from a wide scope of genres – from jazz and stone to avant-garde. The work by Tomasz Chła Quintet eludes the rigid kind frames, and the band's ambition is to redefine the concept of jazz rock, combining it with progressive riffs and sharp, electrifying sound. Their energetic and unpredictable kind frequently evokes associations with legendary King Crimson or the experimental sound of Black MIDI.

The tour will start in China with 4 shows in Shanghai, at the Lincoln Center club (12 and 13 September, 2 concerts will be held each day at 19:30 and 21:30.

The musicians will then execute at Nanning, Malt home Jazz Club (14 September), Chongqing, NUTS Live home (17 September), Xi’an, gathering Jazz Club (18 September) and Xiamen, RealLive & Books Live home (19 September). Musicians will besides host workshops for Sichuan Conservatory of Music students in Chengdu, where they will besides play the performance (15 and 16 September).

Tomasz Chyła Quintet will then fly to South Korea to play 2 concerts in Seoul, on Saturday 20 September at the JazzXOver club and on Sunday 21 September at the Forest Jazz Festival in the city centre. The group will become a permanent member:

  • Krzysztof Hadrych (guitar),
  • Konrad the Soldier (Contrabass),
  • Sławek Korizno (drums)

and will advance the final album "Music We Like To Dance To" released in 2023 by Alpaka Records as well as fresh tracks that will shortly appear on the latest 5th studio quintet album.

It'll be third visit Tomasz Chyła's quintet in Asia as part of the JAZZ POLSK project. In 2018, the band performed, among others, at the oldest Chinese jazz festival 9 Gates in Beijing, where they received a very warm reception. In 2023 the band played a performance tour, which consisted of 15 concerts in the largest agglomerations in China and at Taiwan's largest outdoor jazz festival, Taichung Jazz Festival, where respective tens of thousands of people listened to their performance.

Concerts by Tomasz Chła Quintet in China and South Korea are organized by the Foundation JAZZ IN POLAND as part of the latest task JAZZ POLSku “About the World/East Asia Stop”. JAZZ’S POLAND task “About the World” began in May 2023 and took the form of an global tour. It is inspired by the achievements of the Polish traveler, Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, who was the first Pole to orbit the planet in the mid-19th century. It already has over 200 events in 21 countries on 3 continents.

This year's edition is devoted to Asia, and is simply a summary of the decade of the presence of Polish jazzmen as part of JAZZ POLSK projects on the Asian market. A documentary movie directed by Maciej Głowiński of the same title is besides created around the project, which can be viewed below:
