A fresh edition of the planet economical Forum in Davos was held. I usually skip observing specified events, but this year I have heard so many interesting statements that I have decided to give it a moment. I think the quotes below reflect well the gigantic changes in the world.
Do not anticipate any related statements here. Each part of this article is simply a separate subject that I think deserves attention. any of these statements in my opinion are truly very important, others are here due to their absurdity.
The most costly energy transformation in the world
Friedrich Merz has only been Chancellor of Germany for a fewer months. At the very beginning of his term, he received a chance from destiny – he could simply criticize the idiotic decisions of his predecessors and change the direction of German politics. And there's quite a few evidence that he will. The following passage of his statement, which is the only 1 in this entry is not from Davos, but is crucial adequate that he must be here:
"I want us to have acceptable marketplace energy prices again in the long word and not gotta subsidise it permanently from the national budget. In the long term, it's just not possible.
And this is what I want to say here — it's almost cliché, but it's worth repeating: atomic power out was a major strategical mistake. If specified a step had already been taken, at least 3 years ago, the last operating atomic power plants in Germany should have been left connected to the grid so that we could hold the existing electricity generation capacity.
As a result, present we are implementing the most costly energy transformation in the world. I do not know of a second country that would make it as hard for itself as it did for Germany. We have inherited a situation that we now request to correct, but we simply do not have adequate power to produce energy.
Let's fix this quickly. Power plants should be built. Like I said, we're very close to getting consent. We have submitted all the essential documents, after which we can begin the tendering procedure and proceed to construction.
Importantly, it is besides possible to usage old locations – old network infrastructure can inactive be used. The erstwhile government was different: they wanted to build everything again. Neither old locations nor the usage of an existing gas network were to be allowed.’
Merz's speech is of double importance. Firstly, due to the fact that the German economy is the largest in the EU. If Germany commits economical suicide (as in fresh years), this has a negative effect on many partners, including Poland.
Secondly, the panic around the atom (especially after Fukushima) was truly large in Germany. The communicative by the Greens has taken a strong hold across the country, which has convinced our western neighbours to close atomic power plants. At that time, any champagne corks were fired in Moscow – German resignation meant even stronger dependence on gas from Russia.
It should be stressed that Merz is making a decision in the right direction. The question is whether concrete action will follow this statement.
Towards Protectionism
The United States has been trying to curb globalisation for any time now. Not necessarily due to the fact that it is bad, but simply unfettered trade presently brings more benefits to China than the US. And this for Washington means danger.
For this reason U.S. Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared in Davos to face globalisation and show arguments for the policy promoted by the Donald Trump administration. This is what he said:
"The Trump administration and I are here to make it clear: globalisation has failed the West and the United States of America. It's a failed policy. This is what the planet economical Forum stands for, i.e. exports, offshore, farshore, uncovering the cheapest workforce in the planet and making the planet a better place. The fact is that specified a policy has left America and American workers behind.
We are here to say that “America First” is another model that we encourage another countries to consider, and which assumes that our employees are in the first place. We can have policies that affect our employees.
Sovereignty is your limit, you have the right to have boundaries. The production of medicines or semiconductors should not be transferred abroad. The full industrial base should not be moved abroad. You should not depend on any another country for what is fundamental to your sovereignty. And if you're going to depend on someone, then... Well, he better be your best ally.
This is simply a completely different way of thinking. Completely different from the 1 represented by WEF (World economical Forum).’
Lutnick's message is further proof that the Trump administration will effort to break and remove the rules that have been in force in the global economy in fresh decades. The United States is now presenting itself as a country that has suffered from globalisation. Hence the trade war, hence customs and hence the request to conclude trade agreements separately, alternatively of average free trade.
It is worth noting that the interests of the U.S. government are powerfully missed here by the interests of many American corporations, for which access to all the markets in the planet is simply a blessing. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions can make American companies no longer be able to sale so easily, for example, in Asia or Africa.
Resistance to the US
In Davos besides appeared Mike Carney, or the current Prime Minister of Canada. Readers of our portal may already know this name, but from a very different role. Carney was a central banker for many years – first led the Bank of Canada and then the Bank of England. It can be said that he owned what the central banks were doing between 2008 and 2020, 1 large overprint and a policy that increased wealth inequalities.
Today Carney is in a completely different role, and the Prime Minister of Canada was just at a time erstwhile the environment is no longer so friendly mainly due to Donald Trump's aggressive policy.
And while Carney is not sympathetic, experienced politicians are useful in the current situation, who are able to defy the president of the United States (at least in terms of diplomatic procedures).
Carney pointed out in Davos that “the planet order is breaking down.” He besides noted the hard situation of middle-sized countries, which now gotta cope with the pressures of the top ones. The Prime Minister of Canada stated that smaller states must unite in order to "not be crushed as a consequence of the rivalry of superpowers".
It seems that these words relate to the European Union countries, which, in fresh months as a group, have a policy different from what Donald Trump is trying to do.
Because of the many controversial actions of the president of the United States, we are slow coming to a situation where it is adequate to defy it and are already gaining popularity. Earlier on the basis of specified a conflict, Justin Trudeau's ratings had increased (it was Trump's fault, not Trudeau's), and now after his speech, Carney besides received much praise.
That anti-Semitism again.
Israel had to appear in the planet economical Forum. 1 discussion was attended by Pinchas Goldschmidt, a Swiss rabbi serving as president of the Conference of European Rabbis.
He gave a very strange, confusing speech, which in my opinion puts a fewer points in 1 bag. So first, I will quote it in its entirety and then mention to it.
"October 7 (Hamas attack in Israel) caused global turmoil. There has been a immense increase in organized sponsored anti-Semitism, the number of incidents in universities and streets has increased by up to 500%, and in any cases even by 1000%.
I believe that the emergence of the far right in many European countries is simply a consequence to the uncertainty felt by the alleged "old Europeans" as a consequence of the influx of fresh immigrants from the mediate East.
The fight against Islamophobia and anti-Semitism is so in the interests of both religions and communities. erstwhile we approach this together, these actions will be much more effective. More than 10 years ago, under the patronage of Saudi Arabia, we established the Muslim Council of judaic Leaders, which was successful. We believe that we must proceed this way if we want to guarantee that all European can live in peace and walk the streets peacefully."
One thing at a time, then. Firstly, it was not October 7 that caused an increase in resentment towards Israel. It was triggered by Israel's actions between 2024 and 2025, or genocide in the Gaza Strip, shooting civilians waiting in line for food or attacking and ]]>killing volunteers trying to bring help]]> In war-torn areas.
Secondly, yes, the number of right-wing parties in Europe is surely expanding due to the fact that many immigrants from the mediate East and Africa have appeared on the Old Continent. With their appearance, statistic were fired on crimes. In many large European cities, the services are completely incapable to deal with immigrant gangs. The question is, why is this rabbi's game related to Islamophobia?
Thirdly, it is amazing to see that the Muslim-Jewish Council of Leaders must act to guarantee that the European streets are peaceful. surely the conflict between Jews and Muslims is simply a problem in the Gaza Strip. It would be useful for the leaders of these 2 groups to focus on not killing more civilians there and to end the humanitarian crisis. On the another hand, as far as the streets of European cities are concerned, this is what the leaders of European countries and the service or the military in charge should be first.
Davos 2026
Other crucial statements from Davos include:
- Larry Fink (CEO Blackrock), who stated that asset tokenisation was the only reasonable solution, and the next generation of financial markets should be based, among another things, on stock trading or bonds.
- Christine Lagarde (the head of the ECB), which highlighted the issue of property inequality. And this problem actually exists, but Mrs Lagarde seems to have forgotten who drove this problem in the past decade with powerful overprint and interference in financial markets.
- Javier Milei (President of Argentina), who recalled that the West may inactive have a good future ahead of it, but must turn towards freedom.
From these statements, I think it is the most crucial that Chancellor Merza criticised German policy over the last 15 to 20 years and acknowledged the right of many people active in our section of comments.
