The Italian authorities have been trying for a long time to ease the tensions in transatlantic relations created by the actions and words of Donald Trump's administration, while the Prime Minister of this country Giorgia Meloni was considered to have earned the sympathy of the president of the United States. All of this was not adequate to defend Italy from the effects of American duties. As assessed by the leader of the Italian Labour Union (UIL) Pierpaolo Bombardieri, customs from across the ocean could mean about 60,000 jobs for Italy.
