US president Donald Trump's administration plans to close nearly 30 diplomatic posts abroad “ fresh York Times reports, citing an interior State Department document.
"The Trump administration is considering plans to close 10 embassies and 17 consulates, as well as to reduce or thicken respective another abroad missions," says the publication, citing the interior paper of the State Department consulted with the publication.
The paper notes that as a consequence of specified changes, the US presence will be reduced "on almost all continent": it is proposed to close six embassies in Africa – in South Africa, Eritrea, Gambia, Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, 2 embassies in Europe – in Luxembourg and Malta, as well as diplomatic missions in Grenada and the Maldives. 5 consulates in France, 2 in Germany and 2 more in the Republic of Serbia of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RS BiH) may besides be closed, while respective another diplomatic missions may be closed in Greece, Italy and Portugal.
"It is besides proposed to importantly reduce or completely close the presence of the US embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia, and to close the Diplomatic Support Centre in Baghdad, Iraq, while reducing expenditure on diplomatic missions in Baghdad and Erbil, Iraq. It is besides proposed to consolidate consular support in countries with respective consulates – specified as Japan and Canada – in 1 place," the paper said.
Earlier, the paper reported that the State Department had developed a plan to shut down a twelve U.S. consulates and lay off many abroad workers in its missions around the world, which could have a negative impact on the collection of intelligence and US relations with abroad.
