On Friday, March 8, 2024, on Women's Day, right at 9 Wiejska Street, close the Polish Parliament building, the first abortion clinic in Poland was opened. This initiative has aroused large emotions and has been openly announced on social media by Urszula Zielińska, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment.
“The first abortion clinic in Poland is open!” said Minister Zielińska on the X portal, which surely does not shine with intelligence, due to the fact that late in the media she spoke about Poland not having to buy wind from Russia. "Politicians did not deliver, so the girls took matters into their own hands, and now all conservative-radical MP will have the chance to learn about abortion of everything, because... the clinic is right in front of the entrance to the Sejm," added a small intelligent Zielińska.
AboYes – consequence to no changes in law
AboTak Clinic is an initiative of an activist from the Abortive Dream squad who decided not to wait for political decisions. According to the magazine “Vouge”: “The Actionrs of Abortive Dream squad are not going to wait for the ruling. After Donald Tusk said that during this parliamentary word there was no chance to change the restrictive Polish anti-abortion law, they decided to act and fulfill the dream of both their own and many people in need."
Prime Minister Donald Tusk, despite his election promises, was incapable to make changes to abortion law. Before the 2023 parliamentary elections, he announced that Polish women would have access to "safe and legal abortion until the twelfth week of pregnancy". Unfortunately, the bill was rejected in July by the votes of the PiS Members, the Confederacy, the majority of the PSL and with the support of Roman Giertych of the KO.
Government guidelines – women's gate?
Despite the deficiency of changes in law, the government has prepared guidelines for doctors to facilitate access to legal abortion. During a press conference in August 2023, Tusk explained: “Since we cannot open this gate wide at the minute due to the deficiency of majority in the Sejm, we open the gates. I do not want this to sound ambiguous, but we are looking for a way to act, of course in accordance with the law, which in practice will let access to legal abortion for women who, for various reasons, should have the right to have an abortion."
The Prime Minister besides stressed that doctors would "feel that erstwhile they side with women, the prosecution would besides be on the side of women, not on the side of those heartless and, in our opinion, simply out of bad and very restrictive provisions."
Legal implications – what is the threat of illegal abortion?
Current law in Poland is 1 of the most restrictive in Europe. According to Article 152 of the Criminal Code, “who, with the consent of a woman, interrupts her pregnancy in violation of the provisions of the Act, is subject to imprisonment until the age of 3. The same punishment shall be imposed on the pregnant female who assists or urges the pregnant female to terminate her pregnancy in violation of the law."
Despite these regulations, activists from Abortion Dream squad decided to act by beginning the AboTak Clinic. Their initiative is not only a consequence to the deficiency of changes in law, but besides a symbol of the conflict for women's rights in Poland.
Will AboTak Clinic change the face of Polish abortion debate?
Opening of the AboTak Clinic is an event that can importantly affect public debate in Poland. The location of the clinic – right next to the Sejm – is simply a symbolic motion to draw the politicians' attention to women's problems. Actionrs from Abortion Dream squad show that they do not intend to wait for ruling decisions, but take matters into their own hands.
Will this initiative change anything in Polish law? It's hard to say for now. 1 thing is certain – the AboYes clinic is another step in the fight for women's rights in Poland.
