German president congratulates Nawrock

German president Frank Walter Steinmeier congratulated Charles Nawrock on Monday for his election as president of Poland. In his message he assured that he wanted German-Polish friendship, and expressed hope that he and Nawrocki would contribute to its development.


"Germany and Poland are not only neighbours but besides friends. I am grateful that for many years I have been able to participate in deepening our relation and supporting this process. German-Polish relationship is at my heart. Let us strengthen relationship between our peoples together," Steinmeier wrote in a message published on the website of the president of Germany.

Steinmeier assured that Germans are aware of their continuing work for the "great sufferings caused to Poles" and are grateful that Poland and Germany are now side by side as close partners in the European Union and NATO. "We must work together on the foundation of democracy and the regulation of law to guarantee Europe's security, freedom and prosperity" – stressed Steinmeier.

"You are taking office at a time of large challenge for Europe, in which we hope for Poland" – wrote Steinmeier, addressing the president-elect. "I hope that in the future we will be able to contribute together to (development) German-Polish friendship" - emphasised the German president, adding that "strong Europe needs good German Polish cooperation, especially in these times".

"I would be delighted to welcome you to Berlin soon," wrote the president of Germany.

The outgoing president Andrzej Duda maintained close and frequent contacts with his counterparts in Germany - Joachim Gauck and later Steinmeier. After Duda was elected president in 2015, Berlin was the second capital after Tallinn to visit. Last time the president of Poland stayed in the German capital at the beginning of last week.

According to the authoritative data of the State Election Commission, the presidential elections in Poland were won by Karol Nawrocki, gaining 50.89 percent of the vote; 49.11 percent of voters voted for Rafał Trzaskowski.PAP
