The Second planet War Museum in Gdańsk reported on Tuesday on its website that intends to reconstruct the consistency of the full exhibition.

We are now returning to the first version of the script and the imagination of the authors of the sections “The strategy of Concentration Camps” and “The Road to Auschwitz” of the exhibition entitled “The Game of War” – announced the museum board.

What changes are we talking about?

From the main exhibition, fragments of the exhibition concerning the captain Witold Pilecki, St. Father Maximilian Kolbe and the Ulm household disappeared. All of the elements were placed there after taking power in the museum by people associated with the PiS party. These changes were the subject of litigation and caused quite a few emotion.

We believe that although according to the Court of First Instance the changes at the exhibition were comparatively small, each visitor has the right to see the exhibition in its first form and to measure whether it serves Polish memory policy well – read in the museum statement.

According to the current board, the activities of erstwhile manager Karol Nawrocki, who served in this capacity from 2017 to 2021, warped the meaning created by the authors of the story.

The introduction of a cabinet dedicated exclusively to Roman Catholic clergy and the suspension of portraits of Fr Kolbe and rtm. Pilecki at the central points of this space has distorted the anthropological nature of the communicative – is 1 of the many allegations that the Museum of planet War II mentioned in its statement.

Deputy Prime Minister's on it.

On Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamish commented on the issue on social media.

The main exhibition of the planet War II Museum in Gdańsk must be an example of what unites us, does not divide us. Removing those who witnessed patriotism and the steadfast conflict for good Homeland is unacceptable – wrote on the X portal and added –Exposition fragments concerning the captain Witold Pilecki, Father Maximilian Kolbe and the Ulm household should be restored immediately.

Members of the Law and Justice Service, including Piotr Gliński and Marek Suski, announced on the same day that they would apply for the convening of the Sejm Cultural Committee on the basis of Article 152 on changes in the exhibition of the planet War II Museum.

Political controversy and history

According to the museum itself, this situation has A clear political background, being a conflict about how the relation between political power and the sphere of discipline and culture should look, about whether politicians have the right to violate the autonomy of creators and researchers.

Our aim is that "historical policy" allows citizens to take care of the community. To be non-objective and consistent with the findings of the researchers, even if it was to look a small different than the minister or president of the organization imagined. There is no request to censor exhibitions and fight artists to build a national community and cultivate memory – read on the museum website.
