Why? First of all, the alleged social base that legitimizes their power was much larger than is commonly believed. The large crowds were beneficiaries of their modernization successes. Among better placed and educated people there was besides a fashion for attitude, let us call it briefly positivistic. The PPR was besides subject, throughout its period of government, to interior ideological changes. From the cosmopolitan party, it became increasingly a national party. The Polish Church besides had large merit. Especially Primate Wyszyński, who cared very much about the preservation of the national substance. But they saw it all, and they knew about it the top frontiers of interior strife: the Puławans. To save their influence, they made a deep turn towards the West and found support there. In these circumstances, another Messianic movement was raised in Poland: Solidarity.
