On Monday (4 November this year) at the Cultural Centre in Gdów, Deputy Prime Minister, the head of the MON met with local government, entrepreneurs, organizations and associations active in providing assistance to families affected by floods.

In September 2024, the Opole state was affected by a catastrophic flood which flooded over 90% of the village. The flood, caused by intense rainfall caused by the Genuese lowlands, brought demolition on an unprecedented scale – water reached a level of 1 and a half meters in places, streets and houses were flooded and many residents had to be evacuated. Lewin Brzeski was in a critical situation due to the deficiency of power and the cut-off from basic services. The School in Skrzegoszczy was besides very badly affected, where the school hall, classrooms, ground level of the fresh school and boiler area were flooded. School classes were suspended until further notice. The efficient coordination of the activities of local governments and economical operators allowed 132 students with carers to attend the Green School to the municipality of Gdów. It was a immense support not only for children, but besides for their parents, who had to clean up their flooded homes at the time.

At a climax, more than 25,000 soldiers were active in fighting the flood and removing its effects. All kinds of our armed forces have been used. The military carried out tasks related to flood action in all dimensions: evacuation, security, strengthening of the shafts, cleaning up the area. More than 1,300 units of military equipment, including more than 700 passenger and dense goods vehicles, sanitary vehicles, dump trucks, and airships and bomb boats, were directed to first flood-related, then to remove the effects of floods.
After passing the flood wave, another action taken by the Polish Army is the ongoing operation of "Peniks", whose primary aim is to rebuild and organize the flood sites. It's a multi-week military presence to take all the action to organize the area. The operation involves engagement, at least until the end of the year, but may be extended on time, which will be essential to bring everything to a state of order and usability. Phoenix aims to mitigate the effects of floods on local communities and accelerate infrastructure reconstruction. The tasks of the operation besides include support for interior safety and assistance to the civilian population.
