The hanging of the Israel flag on the facade of the Teatr Wielki in Łódź in connection with the ongoing ballet festival has caused strong controversy and social tensions in fresh days. This symbol has twice become the mark of vandalism, and is now no longer on the building.
The last incidental occurred last night from 26 to 27 April. Unknown perpetrators destroyed the flag, leaving traces of red paint on it resembling palm prints. This motion had a clear symbolic character and was perceived as a form of protest against Israel's policy. A akin event occurred only a fewer days earlier. Both cases are subject to police investigation.
The case has sparked a wide public debate. any commentators argue that, in the context of a tense global situation, the presence of the Israeli flag on a public institution is inappropriate and can be seen as a political gesture. Others point to the request to separate current conflicts from cultural activities.
The manager of the theatre, Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiolowski, emphasized that the flag hanging is due to the long-term practice accompanying the event – national symbols of the countries from which the artists participating in the festival come are presented on the building. In his view, the decision was purely organisational and was not a political expression.
At the same time, the situation falls within the broader context of the problems surrounding the management of the institution. The manager has been faced with an appeal procedure conducted by the Marshal's Office of the Łódź Voivodeship in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Among the allegations raised are issues related to failure of trust, organisational problems and management style, as well as accusations of mistreatment of workers.
According to media reports, flag incidents could further exacerbate the situation and accelerate the decision to change the position of director. Everything indicates that it will end its function with the beginning of May.
