Dr. Małgorzata Bonikowska, CSM president for tv SLAV: “The EU does not want a divorce with America, but must show “European claws”

In an interview with Ukrainian-speaking tv SLAV, the president of the Center for global Relations, Dr. Małgorzata Bonikowska, referred to Donald Trump's latest decisions concerning customs, transatlantic relations and the impact of his policies on the interior situation in the US.

"Europe does not realize the logic of Donald Trump's decision"

According to Dr. Bonikowska, Donald Trump's decisions are incomprehensible to European partners and hit not only commercial relations but besides the United States economy. ‘The issue of customs is very meaningful due to the fact that virtually all countries outside Russia are burdened with these duties“ She noted.

“Trump does not work in vacuum – Americans will settle it”

The expert stressed that the consequences of US administration will be felt not only for allies but besides for American citizens and markets. ‘This will very rapidly have a very negative impact on the US economy and consumer – rising prices, falling company value, hitting capital and the richestIt’s okay. ” As she added, "Americans are already out on the streets present and protesting"And Trump's unpopular decisions can translate into election results for Congress.

Europe seeks balance: strength and reason

In the face of escalating tensions, Europe will respond to the decisions of the U.S. administration, but – as CSM president pointed out – “not to divorce, but to talk reason to the Americans”. According to Dr. Bonikowska, the European Union should respond decisively, "showing European claws"but at the same time stay open to cooperation. ‘We don't want that. We want Americans on their side, do business with them, invest with them, and work together in the planet policy area.“ She said.

Europe is economically strong but dependent on security

The conversation besides highlighted ongoing asymmetry in defensive relations. "Americans know Europe has strong economical opportunities, but in the area of safety depends on the United States" – assessed Dr. Bonikowska. She besides added that "Europeans do not burn to buy weapons in the US due to the fact that they are not accompanied by technology transfer".
