The EU plans to make a alleged "military mobility zone" ("Schengen military zone"), which will let the fast and efficient movement of troops, equipment and soldiers within the Union, besides towards the east flank of the continent.
The current infrastructure – bridges, roads, tunnels, railway lines – is frequently not adapted to the transport of dense military equipment (e.g. tanks) and there are many bureaucratic and legal procedures that hold metastasis.
The current infrastructure – bridges, roads, tunnels, railway lines – is frequently not adapted to the transport of dense military equipment (e.g. tanks) and there are many bureaucratic and legal procedures that hold metastasis.
Planned solutions:
• Harmonisation of EU associate States' rules and procedures to let fast border crossing and transport of military equipment.
• Construction and modernisation of infrastructure in key corridors – land, rail, road – and reinforcement of elements of "double-use" (civil-military) infrastructure.
• Protection of critical infrastructure. Bridges, railway stations, high-speed roads – all of this becomes a possible mark in case of conflict. Increase the resilience of these facilities to warfare and sabotage.
• make mechanisms to rapidly reconstruct infrastructure to fitness after possible attacks.
• Close cooperation with NATO so that EU preparations are consistent with the Alliance.
In the face of an expanding geopolitical threat (especially in the east flank of the EU), the fast and efficient transport of military equipment may be key to responding to emergencies.
The removal of infrastructure and procedural barriers increases associate States' defence readiness and their ability to interact.
