"Vampira of Zagłębie" crimes: the actual communicative of Zdzisław Marchwicki

In the 1960s and 1970s, a series of murders took place in Poland that shook public opinion. The perpetrator of these crimes was “The Vampire of Zagłębie” who was to kill 14 women. 1 of the victims was Jolanta Gierk, the niece of Edward Gierek, then the first secretary of the provincial committee of the PZPR. Was Zdzisław Marchwicki truly “The Vampire of Zagłębie”?

It is worth noting that crime in Poland is decreasing. In 2018, 136 homicides were reported, making 0.35 per 100,000 inhabitants. This means that in 2 years the number of murders has fallen by 23.5%.

However, despite the decline in crime, there are inactive issues that shake public opinion. This was the case in the case of the Vampire from Zagłębie. This case remains 1 of the most celebrated and most scandalous in the past of Polish forensics.

Today, thanks to the improvement of technology and forensic medicine, it is possible to solve cases that were formerly considered impossible. However, there are inactive cases that stay unresolved and the perpetrators stay at large.

In the case of "Vampira of the Basin", the case was yet resolved, but the perpetrator was not correctly identified. Today, after years, it turns out that Zdzisław Marchwicki was not “The Vampire of Zagłębie”. Then who murdered women? The answers to these questions are not yet known, but are inactive being examined and analysed by experts.
