The coffin with the body of Pope Peter was transported from Vatican on Saturday afternoon to the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial – reported Vatican News portal.

The rite of placing the Pope's body in the grave will not be broadcast due to the fact that it is simply a private event, warned the Vatican beforehand.
In his will, Francis asked for burial in a simple tomb without peculiar decorations on the ground level. Unlike many of his predecessors, he chose burials not in St. Peter's Cathedral, but in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with the widely worshipped icon of Our woman Salus Populi Romani ("Salvation of the Roman People").
