“Tarcza East” is to strengthen the east border of Poland

The Ministry of National Defence presented a task to strengthen the east border of Poland under the name “Tarcza East”. The dam aims to deter the opponent and strengthen the defence capabilities of the Polish Army.

On Monday 27 May at the General Staff of the Polish Army, the Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, State Secretary at the Ministry of Cezary Tomczyk and Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army General Wiesław Kukuła presented the main assumptions of the national deterrence and defence programme “Tarcza East”. Reinforcements that will extend along the east border of Poland. Its main nonsubjective is to strengthen defence and strengthen the current barrier at the border with Belarus. The construction is planned for the years 2024-2028. Apart from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the Ministry of State Acts and the Ministry of Infrastructure are active in the work of the Task Coordination Team.

We will work with our partners and allies within NATO and the European Union, especially with the Baltic states (...) drawing on various kinds of experience and patterns. We will present this task to European and Natov levels, as 1 of the most important, changing safety aspects in the region - National Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak Kamisz.

The aim of the “Tarchy East” is, among another things, to support the capabilities of the Polish Army, including strengthening detection, informing and tracking systems, preparing advanced operating bases, preparing logistics nodes and creating appropriate infrastructure for anti-drone systems. The hotel notes that the strengthening programme is part of the creation of a comprehensive regional defence infrastructure built in cooperation with the Baltic States to counter threats on the east flank of NATO. As Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz pointed out, fresh infrastructure and utilized technologies are intended to defend the Republic, hinder the movement of opposing troops, facilitate the movement of own troops, defend the population and guarantee the highest safety for those who defender the safety of the state.

These are investments concerning both military units and airports, but besides matters that affect the borders of the Republic. (...) We have about 700 km of border to secure, including 400 km with Belarus. We want this task to be implemented immediately. It'll start this year. Planning continues. We want this program to end in 2028. The estimated cost is about PLN 10 billion. We're just talking about material costs. It is simply a immense investment on a national scale, but besides on a NATO scale- Secretary of State at the MON Cezary Tomczyk.

Chief of General Staff Wiesław Kukuła stressed that the “Tarcza East” would cover a section of the border of nearly 700 km, of which between 400-500 km will concern the improvement of various types of fortification infrastructure of various stages. The military stated that the main reason for this programme and, consequently, the military operation is to increase the resilience of the State and to deter and prepare for the defence of the border region, not only in the context of a conflict of advanced strength and symmetrical nature, but besides of an asymmetrical and hybrid conflict.
